Description

From the front of the Leisure Centre cross over the main road diagonally left into Rinkfield, at the end turning left towards Natland. (Note – an alternative off-road start is going left on the shared path in front of the LC, then crossing the main road at the signed central reservation and descending on to the old canal route through the wood to soon join the tarmac road to Natland.)

Pass through Natland to Sedgwick, where immediately after the canal bridge overhead turn left (sign Milnthorpe), and again left at the nearby (unsigned) lane end, to soon pass over the dual carriageway and on for a couple of miles through Hincaster to the crossroads near Woodhouse.

Here go right (Milnthorpe/ Woodhouse), and at the nearby Woodhouse T go right again, and immediately left (signs Milnthorpe).

In a couple of  minutes, after a short hill go left (unsigned) to and through Rowell to go left at the main B6385 road (unsigned). Soon pass over the dual carriageway, and immediately take the left turn (past Lane Farm) towards Stainton.

After passing Field End farm the ride comes to a canal bridge. There take the right turn (sign Stainton) onto this narrow lane. In 700 yards or so the road widens, with a tree and bench, and there you cross the river by a narrow footbridge. Go left on this little lane (diagrammatic on the map) to soon join (unsigned- going right) a larger lane taking you past a farm and a school to a crossroads.

Here cross straight over (Natland/ Kendal, blue bike sign, take care, limited visibility) and up the short sharp hill, with the cemetery and church on the right, then after a short down and gentle up the ride come to a fork. Here there is a choice.

Either bear left (NCN sign) to drop down to the main road, here going right and returning through Natland to Kendal.

Or turn right to reach the nearby Barrows Green Punchbowl by dropping down (limited visibility, take care) to the pub. To return, simply retrace your steps to the aforementioned fork, dropping down to Natland and on to Kendal.
