Description

Start  150 yds/m uphill from Kendal Leisure Centre by crossing the road (right) via the pedestrian refuge from the left hand pavement onto the cycleway (steep drop at start), following it soon to join Natland road by Clarks warehouse. Continue to Natland, soon reached.

There turn left by the shop (Oxenholme/ railway sign) and quickly right and left at the village green to go up Helm Lane by the church. Here you have now joined National Cycleway Number 70 (Walney to Wear).

At the top cross straight over to a small rising lane (W2W 70 sign), at the end of which turn right by the Station Inn  (NCN 70 carries straight on here).

In 1 ½ miles (2+ km) in Old Hutton/ Middleshaw turn left and follow the Ewebank signs up the steady climb (bearing left in a couple of minutes) to arrive at Ewebank. Here go left, and then in 200 yds/ m right (both unsigned) at the T .

From here it is 2 ½ miles (4 km) up and down to the next junction. The climb is steep, 14% and lasts for  ½ + mile (1 km). There are grand views at the top before a rapid descent down and over the motorway, then up to the T junction.

Turn right (Old Hutton sign) and down, soon taking the first right ( Bendrigg Lodge sign) past the reservoir, and  the next right in a further mile (1.5 km), unsigned but by a wood (small Bendrigg Lodge sign goes straight ahead).

After going over the nearby M6 the potholed lane drops quickly back to Ewebank and the T junction just beyond, where go left downhill (where not long ago you turned right and uphill).

At the T junction past a small settlement (Millholme) bear left (unsigned) and in 200 yds go right  (unsigned) up and down a short hill. At the bottom go left along a small lumpy lane and left again in ¾ mile (1+ km) onto Beehive Lane, then in a few minutes joining the main road you came out on.

Here turn right  to soon pass the Station Inn and drop down to the station and Kendal beyond, bearing right at the lights back to the Leisure Centre.
