KDCS EXTRAS NEWS - MARCH 2018

Several members of the mountain bike faction of KDCS met recently to plan a programme of extra rides / events for 2018. These. were to be in addition to the usual Thursday rides. Whilst these are still being progressed it was felt that giving all KDCS members an overview of what has been proposed.

2 day trip from Dufton over Great Dun Fell with an overnight stay at YHA Langdon Beck organised by Andy Gillham

Teesdale - May 17th-18th

Meet in the public car park in Dufton at 1030.  (If there is insufficient room in the car park meet there anyway and I will direct you to alternative parking.)

Route Day 1: up the tarmac road to Great Dun Fell (the most strenuous part of the whole trip) - off piste to Cross Fell - bridleway to Garrigill (refreshments) - road and track to Tynehead - muddy hill and short road to Yad Moss - track to Cow Green - road to Langdon Beck.
Day 2: optional visit to High Force (8km detour) - Cow Green Reservoir and Cauldron Snout (and look at arctic-alpine flora if anything is out) - bridleway to High Cup Nick - descent to Dufton (optional alternative descent to Murton).

The route is mostly non-technical and on wide tracks but there will be some pushing here and there.  Day 2 is not long and gives time for exploration (geology, natural history, industrial history) should people be interested.

Overnight accommodation is in Langdon Beck YH where you can have a bed in a dormitory room for £18 or four can share a room for £59 (£3 reduction for members).  The YH can provide meals (breakfast £5.63, packed lunch £5.75, dinner £9.95); I will use the local pub for dinner.  All you will need for overnight is a small wash kit and maybe a shirt and trousers for evening.  Bedding is provided and a shower towel can be hired.

Please go to https://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/langdon-beck and book yourself in.  You may want to get together in multiples of 4 for private rooms - chaps currently hedging their bets are Daniel A, Graham C and Mike S.

Get in touch with me for any further info or to find out the latest attendees.

Cheers,

Andy

For those wishing to stop over on the Tuesday and Wednesday evenings there is a variety of accommodation available - The Green Dragon pub at Hardraw has hotel accommodation, various size bunk rooms from 2 people upwards. There is the Old Hall Cottage campervan / campsite in Hardraw and the Old School Bunkhouse. All are near the pub. In Hawes down the hill there are pubs, B&B, Hawes Caravan Club site etc. I have booked into the Green Dragon Bunk House in Hardraw This has good toilets and showers but only a small kitchen area. The pub however is very good and does meals plus it sells great beer.
